Crisis House began as the vision of the Sussex County Inter-Agency Council. Its members noticed the growing number of homeless and decided to offer shelter at no cost to families and single persons who found themselves homeless while in Sussex County.
During the first year that Crisis House was open, the clientele was
mainly intact families who had been fire victims, were homeless through eviction from substandard dwellings, single individuals who were either relocating to the area, and clients put out because of family problems. The length of stay originally in the shelter was mandated
at 3 days and very few stayed longer. Due to the clientele changing, and the direction of the clientele, changes in procedure regarding the length of stay within the shelter, single clients and families are now allowed to stay for thirty days.Since 1987, the number of homeless
has doubled. Due to this increase, we are in the process of gathering funds to build a new structure to help handle this ever increasing problem we as a society are facing.
